Welcome to Pens By Rob.com
I got my start in making beautiful pens from a co-worker, Keith, who always carried a beautiful wooden pen and after asking where he got it, he told me he had made it himself. After some coaxing, he agreed to teach me how to make my own pen. We went to his workshop where I picked out a nice piece of wood and he showed me all the steps to making my own pen. I was surprised at how much work it took to make a handmade pen but was immediately drawn to this new hobby and over the next few months made a few more as Christmas gifts for friends and family. After seeing everyone's reaction to how beautiful their new handmade pens were, I knew this was something I wanted to continue. I then started acquiring tools, one at a time, and now have a lathe, band saw, drill press, and all the other goodies required. I also joined the Toronto Woodturners Guild and attend monthly meetings, honing my skills and techniques with tips from several experienced penmakers. I have spent many hours reading books, magazines, searching the net, and talking to master penmakers while learning the craft of wood turning. Penmaking has become a wonderful hobby, and each and every pen is made with care and pride in workmanship. All of my pens are made in my workshop which is located in beautiful Stouffville, Canada. Please have a look around my webpage and feel free to ask any questions.
I also do my own casting. I combine 2 parts of resin mix it and then I add migments and other pigmentation to achieve the proper color combinations, look that I am aiming for. I have been experimenting with wood burl caps and resin to make a truly unique look. The processes are always getting more complicated as I progress on this learning.
